What was the last thing you smiled about?

Posted on Dec 30th, 2008 by Kathrine
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 30, 2008:

The love of my life was coming home last night from Japan, and as we all know, that's almost a day flight. He told me he'd be coming home that night so i already planned on an all nighter waiting for him. In the meantime, i decided to get on the internet and start on a research paper i've been needing to do, but just as i was about to start i checked my facebook messages. In my inbox, i found a sweet message reading all my actions, "don't stay up babe for me because you need the sleep you always whine about, i'll be home soon! you don't have to worry about me! you'll wake up with me, i promise." I couldn't help but chuckle and smile.

Mother, Father, Am I A Success?

Posted on Dec 16th, 2008 by Kathrine
Today's world is a stressful one that consist of a pinpointed list of things you must do to be accurately successful, but what measures this ideal success? What makes you more successful then the next man or women in line? Can't this only be determined by one's self?
Success should be measured amongst yourself because you can only give the best that you can do. Parents today are pressuring their children into decisions they don't want to make because they seek the ultimate perfection, and in this lovely world I am proud to say that perfection does not exist. But please don't misunderstand me, parents aren't the sole blame here; they just want best for their kids.
Sometimes I feel lost in the crazy blizzard of college talk in my high-school and what's best to do to for top colleges, but sometimes I wonder what about me? What about what I want to do? Are we letting our once in a life time teenage years slip away so easily? It's a morbid idea that seems to be deepening in the souls of our materialistic world.
I discovered these ideas one breezy afternoon as I stared dreamily at the white board in-front of me filled with all types of geometrical shapes and numbers. The girl next to me politely asked, "so what college do you want to go to or what do you want to pursue?" At first, I didn't even respond. I had to take a moment for myself to truly think about this, no one has addressed me with such a question since kindergarten ("So what do you want to be when you grow up, honey?"). I slowly turned and said, "I have no idea where I want to go, all I know is that I want to be a writer and attend a college in an urban city." She gave me a funny look. Questioning herself, "a writer? How does she plan on making any money?"
I once thought the same thing, till I took chemistry class and realized I could never learn to do something I didn't love (no offense to all the great chemist out there). I love writing and my words are the only things I have, and not to trust your heart is a terrible thing to do. So now I plan to keep it up and see where this road takes me because its the path I find happiness in, where I can find true pride and success.
